The main drawback of implants is that they can be very expensive and are not usually covered by dental assurance plans. However, in order to make dental implantation as affordable as potential for the greatest number of people, your local dental office can come up with financing and cost plans to fit your budget.

Who Can advantage from Dental Prosthodontics?

Those who have lost teeth because of an emergency are usually the best candidates. Of course, even those who are conscientious about oral hygiene can get a cavity, and if a tooth is lost because of decay, an implant may help.

People who are not good candidates for implantation are smokers, those who suffer from periodontal (gum) disease, and those taking immuno-suppressant drugs (such as transplant patients). However, there are other alternatives available, about which you can learn more from your dental professional.

The Story of Dental Implantation

Many citizen are surprised to learn that the first dental implantation surgery was done over 1,400 years ago in what is now Central America and the Yucatan region of Mexico. Mayan surgeons are known to have used carved bits of seashell to replace natural teeth. This knowledge is based on an archaeological find in 1931 and subsequent radiological tests performed on the human remains 40 years later, showing that the patient had still been alive when the procedure was done.

In the 1950s, study at the University of Cambridge demonstrated fascinating properties of titanium that cause bone tissue to bond with it. The customary study was aimed at applications for orthopedic surgery, but the principle proved equally efficient when it came to dentistry. In 1959, Italian prosthodontist Dr. Stefano Tremonte created the first practical dental implant for a human patient; within ten years, the techniques were being used colse to the world.

Implant Surgery

Implants are done in two stages. While the first appointment, the hole is drilled and the titanium screw inserted. This is a small more complicated than it sounds; in order to preclude the bone from being damaged, it is indispensable to begin with a very small hole, then moderately widen the opening with drill bits of graduated sizes. Once the allowable size has been achieved, the titanium screw, which will serve as an "artificial root" and anchor the prosthesis to the jaw, is inserted.

After the bone has had an opening to fuse with the titanium, the actual prosthetic tooth is inserted and secured.
