Studies by the National Association of Dental Plans show that at least 68% of all Americans pay too much for their dental insurance. To help you in getting better rates I have done some research and have came up with the following:

1. Find out how many dentists are there in your area

Before you buy any insurance plans, find out how many dentists and dentist specialist are there in your area. Then find out how many of them will accept the plan that you are considering to purchase. Let's do a logical thought process here, what is the use of taking a dental plan if there are no dentists in your area? My advice, do the research!

2. Paying for the insurance

Once you get an insurance plan, you will have the option of paying on a monthly or an annual basis. This is definitely your choice; an annual plan would save you more money than a month to month basis plan.

3. Dental specialists

It is a good idea to get a plan that covers treatments done by specialists. Therefore, choose a plan that covers at least 25% discount on works done by a dental specialist such as Periodontists, Orthodontists, Oral Surgeons and etc. If you live in an area where dental specialists are rare then finding one that accepts discounted plans will be difficult as well. Just beware that there are procedures that normal dentists can perform and do not require specialist treatments such as whitening, implants and root canals, so if your local dentist can do it, let him do it as he will charge you lesser rates.

4. Time Frame

Standard dental insurance will take approximately 7 - 10 days before you can use your benefits. If you need to visit a dentist real soon, then look for a plan that will kick in within 24 hours after joining
